International Forum "Sustainable Ocean and G7 Ministers' Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment in Sapporo”

OrganizerOcean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF)

The Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation is pleased to host the international forum "Sustainable Ocean and G7 Ministers' Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment in Sapporo."

The international community has identified a sustainable ocean as one of the key policy objectives and substantive progress has been made at a series of international conferences and policy dialogues including the United Nations Ocean Conference and Our Ocean Conferences. Last year, an international agreement to eliminate harmful fishing subsidies was adopted at the World Trade Organization. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework which includes a goal to protect 30% of the ocean was also adopted as well. The international agreement on marine biodiversity in the areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) was also adopted in early March this year. This year, it is expected to make progress at the negotiations on an international agreement to eliminate marine plastic debris. The leaders and ministers of the G7 countries have been demonstrating leadership in addressing ocean issues are cross-sectoral and require international concerted actions. At this international forum, based on the outcomes of a series of international conferences and international agreements, leaders and experts from various fields will provide their perspectives and it is intended to facilitate discussions on how the G7 countries can play an instrumental role in promoting international concerted actions to achieve a sustainable ocean.

We look forward to having all of you at the proposed International Forum.
