6/16 Ocean Forum “Challenges of Pacific island countries and Perspectives for strengthening partnership with Japan”

OrganizerOcean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF)

The Pacific island countries endowed with small land space including low lying areas hold large ocean areas in their Exclusive Economic Zones, and play an important role in marine conservation. At the same time, they face sea water warming, typhoon, drought and other extreme climatic events. They have endured socio-economic damages by the COVID-19 pandemic as tourism, an important economic sector was suspended. The Government of Japan is organizing the 9th Pacific Island Leaders Summit (PALM9) to be held online the week of 28 June 2021. As PALM9 approaches, it is proposed to facilitate discussions on the perspectives for strengthening partnership between Pacific island countries and Japan in overcoming challenges faced by the Pacific Island countries. The discussions will be conducted with representatives from the Japanese government and Mie Prefecture, the ambassadors of Pacific island countries, and other experts and stakeholders of Mie Prefecture, which originally planned to host PALM9.

We look forward to your participation.
