1/23 International Seminar "Climate Change, Migration, and Vulnerability"

OrganizerOcean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF)

Along with increasing interest in the problems associated with climate change, concern has risen, especially among Pacific Island States, that the scale of migration will increase, due to land erosion from sea level rise and deteriorating living environments that are predicted to accompany it. For low-lying small island and coastal States in particular the exodus of residents to foreign countries for a variety of reasons including climate change, and the establishment of processes to facilitate the rebuilding of migrants’ lives and their harmonious integration in their host communities, are matters of urgency for international society. The Sasakawa Peace Foundation - Ocean Policy Research Institute, along with the University of Tokyo, the Environmental Law Institute (USA), Hosei University, and others, carried out joint international research on the theme of climate change and migration, and published a report based on the research findings in the December 2019 Special Issue of the Journal of Disaster Research. This seminar is being held to promote the dissemination of the findings of the Journal through lectures and debates by its authors.
