Workshop Information
How should those in charge of health-care and public health administration react when a large-scale disaster causes extensive damage to medical institutions and administrative infrastructure?

Over a period of 18 months immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Center for Community Health, Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine, has been engaged in an SPF grant-funded project entitled 'Toward Public Health Sector Recovery: Lessons from the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.' It is the first of its kind worldwide, to produce detailed film and digital footage of the ever-changing situation and needs in public health at the scene of a natural disaster. As a result, it has been possible to obtain data pertaining not only to the short term medical response, but also long term efforts within the public health system and means of strengthening the function of administrative staff involved in reconstructing the public health system after a disaster.

In the interests of presenting the issues clarified in the project regarding public health and crisis management both in Japan and overseas, a workshop was held. Among those attending were Tadashi Ishii, a professor at Tohoku University Hospital (formerly of Ishinomaki Red Cross Hospital), who has long worked on the front lines at the regions hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and Dr. Arturo M Pesigan of the WHO Kobe Center, who has long been involved with disaster support in the Asia Pacific Region, among many other experts in the field of public health.
