The Sasakawa Peace Foundation presents a symposium as part of a project named “Policy Framework for Refugee Acceptance and the Role of Japan”, featuring Oskar Ekblad of the Swedish Migration Board, a global thought leader on refugee policy, along with Kenneth Forssell from Ljusdals, a pioneer of refugee integration program in local communities.

Scandinavian countries, which do not have mass immigration, nevertheless have comprehensive policies for accepting refugees. What are the philosophy and strategies of Scandinavian countries and how do they promote the successful settlement in their local communities? In cooperation with experts on immigration policies and supporting self-reliance of refugees, the SPF has carried out a study in various Scandinavian countries on respective policies.

At the symposium, the two experts from Sweden will be joined by Naoko Obi from UNHCR representation in Japan; Miyuki Nakagawa, former Counsellor from the Cabinet Secretariat in charge of the Refugee Resettlement pilot program; Miho Yoshizaki who has been taking care of the first group of the Resettlement Refugees in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture; as well as Professor Junichi Akashi from the University of Tsukuba, who carried out the study into Scandinavian policies.
