Lecture Information
On October 29, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation hosted Dr. Daniel I. Okimoto, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Science at Stanford University, to assess the current state of Japan’s economy and present his thoughts on a viable way forward for Japan to achieve steady economic growth. Can Japan’s economy get back and remain on a trajectory for stable growth, or is Japan a lost cause? Dr. Daniel I. Okimoto addressed this question and discussed a strategy focusing on the development and export of basic infrastructure including energy, transportation, healthcare, and tourism.
During his 35-year tenure at Stanford, Dr. Okimoto has served as professor of political science and senior fellow, Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. He is Director Emeritus and co-founder of the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC). Currently, he serves as the first Chairman of the Board of Councilors of the U.S.-Japan Council (USJC). He received his BA in history from Princeton University, MA in East Asian studies from Harvard University, and PhD in political science from the University of Michigan. Mr. Tadashi Nakamae, President of Nakamae International Economic Research, will serve as moderator.
