The Sasakawa Peace Foundation launched the project, “Assessment; Japan-U.S. Response to Fukushima Crisis” in July 2011 as a part of its Japan-US Exchange Program. Led by five specialists both on security and nuclear related field, this project aims at reviewing and analyzing lessons learned from the Japan-U.S. cooperation and coordination after Fukushima nuclear accident. On the basis of these assessments, the project provides policy recommendations for improving the US-Japan crisis management capabilities.
On the occasion of publishing the project’s final report, we will host its rollout event by inviting two prominent American experts as guest commentators: Professor Richard Love of US National Defense University and Ms. Jane Nakano of the Center for Strategy and International Studies (CSIS). Professor Love was involved in coordinating US-Japan cooperation after the Fukushima accident through the Department of Defense (DOD), and Ms. Nakano is an expert on energy issues including nuclear energy.
Needless to say, Japan and the United States have deepened its relationship on the basis of the alliance, yet it is hard to say that US-Japan coordination on the Fukushima nuclear crisis was smoothly conducted especially at the initial stage. From this experience, there are so many lessons to be learned particularly regarding the crisis management. At this event, we will mainly discuss Japan’s response to the accident, US-Japan coordination, and potential future cooperation between two countries. Two guests from the US will give their comments from US perspectives. In addition, we will have a special session for Professor Love, where he will make a short speech about the Fukushima accident viewed from DOD's perspective.
