On the afternoon of May 22, the Brookings Institution in conjunction with the Sasakawa Peace Foundation will convene a public event on the future of America’s military presence and posture in the Asia-Pacific region in light of U.S. defense spending reductions, the American presidential race, and regional conditions and dynamics. Scholars from the United States and Japan, as well as China and the Republic of Korea, will analyze the situation for 2012, 2013, and beyond. Two panels will be held, the first to explain and explore the changes in American policy, the second to assess implications for the region.
