Lecture Information
The Sasakawa Peace Foundation was honor to host Mr. John D. Podesta, Chair of the Center for American Progress (CAP) and former White House Chief of Staff to President William J. Clinton, to offer his perspectives on the partnership between the United States and Japan, and the future of the relationship as the U.S. rebalances its foreign policy towards Asia. The speech took a broad look at this new focus, while discussing specific areas where the U.S. and Japan can cooperate to make both the United States and Japan stronger, more prosperous, and more secure.

Mr. Podesta founded CAP in 2003 and served as the Center’s President and CEO until 2011. Prior to CAP, Mr. Podesta was White House chief of staff to President William J. Clinton. He served in the president’s cabinet and as a principal on the National Security Council. After the 2008 Presidential election, Mr. Podesta served as co-chair of President Obama’s transition, where he coordinated the priorities of the incoming administration’s agenda, oversaw the development of its policies, and spearheaded its appointments of major cabinet secretaries and political appointees.
