The Sasakawa Peace Foundation invited Dr. Aaron L. Friedberg, Professor of Princeton University to give a lecture on the theme of his new book, “A Contest for Supremacy: China, America and the Struggle for Mastery in Asia”, in Tokyo on March 5th, 2012. Professor Friedberg is a distinguished scholar in international politics who served as a Deputy Assistant for National Security Affairs in the Office of the Vice President from 2003 to 2005. He is also currently working for Mitt Romney running for Republican presidential nomination as a member of his Foreign Policy and National Security Advisory Team.

Since 1972, the relationship between the United States and China has shown its two different aspects of cooperation and competition, pursuing essentially stable, mixed strategies towards one another. However, having faced China’s growing power, the two countries are now more engaged in an intensifying rivalry. Beijing's recent assertiveness has frightened and antagonized its neighbors, making them more willing than ever before to cooperate with the U.S. in counterbalancing with China. The question now is how the U.S. will confront future China. Will the U.S. secure enough financial resources and defense budget? How will the U.S. find the political resolve while encouraging and supporting Asian countries?

In his book, Professor Friedberg is discussing that the ultimate aim of China’s strategy appears to be to establish itself as the preponderant power in Asia, and its confrontation with the U.S. will be deepened because of very different character of domestic political system and ideology between the two countries. In the course of the lecture, Professor Friedberg provided his vision of the future relationship of the two Pacific powers, future of Asia, and the implications for Japan.
