Three years have passed since the Obama administration came into office in 2009. Looking back on those three years and going into the 2012 Presidential Election year, what could we conclude about the Obama administration’s Asia policy and its implications for the U.S.-Japan alliance?
The Sasakawa Peace Foundation invited Mr. Chris Nelson, Senior Vice President of Samuels International Associates, Inc. and the author of the “Nelson Report,” to address this question with a look at the North Korea problem and other regional developments. He also discussed how TPP and trade policy fit into the overall U.S.-Japan equation. Mr. Nelson has been a professional journalist and Capitol Hill foreign affairs analyst since 1966. On the Hill, Mr. Nelson specialized in U.S.-China relations during the Carter Administration's normalization process, and later served on the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and as Senior Advisor to the Senate Democratic Policy Committee. Through the “Nelson Report,” he has provided daily briefings on the politics of trade and legislative and policy developments in Washington, D.C. for almost three decades.
The meeting was an opportunity to hear firsthand Mr. Nelson’s observations and analysis of the Obama administration’s China policy in the context of the political and regional security developments in the region in recent years, including events surrounding the South China Sea.
