Invitation to a lecture Lecture Session
"Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century" by Dr. Peter W. Singer (February 28, 2011)
Closed.
The Sasakawa Peace Foundation has invited Dr. Peter W. Singer, Senior Fellow and Director, 21st Century Defense Initiative at The Brookings Institution, to speak on the theme of ‘Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century” on February 28th, 2011. In Corporate Warriors: The Rise of the Privatized Military Industry, and Children at War, Dr. Singer has raised serious questions about recent battles where new actors such as military industries and children have been in charge. In his latest book, Wired for War, he explores what happens when science fiction becomes battlefield reality. An amazing technological revolution has started to change how wars are fought; remote-controlled drones strike daily at terrorists in places like Afghanistan and Pakistan, and the number of unmanned military systems on the ground has gone from zero to 12,000 over the last five years. It is a global revolution, with 44 nations now building, buying, and using military robotics, including the major powers in Asia. But this is only the start. What does this change bode for peace and security in the 21st Century? How will it affect when wars start and end, and can our politics, laws and ethics keep up?
