"Enemies into Friends: How Peace Breaks Out" by Dr. Charles A. Kupchan on Nov. 19 (Fri)

Is the world destined to suffer endless cycles of rivalry and war or can nations find a path to stable peace? At a lecture hosted by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation on November 19, 2010, Dr. Charles A. Kupchan, professor of International Affairs at Georgetown University and senior fellow for the Council on Foreign Relations will explore when and how enmity gives way to amity and offer novel insights into the causes of peace, referencing historical case studies that range from the thirteenth century through the present and span the globe. In his lecture, he will examine the role that diplomacy, domestic institutions, economic interdependence, and culture play in enabling friendship to prevail over hostility by discussing successful and failed cases of peace-building, including Anglo-American rapprochement (1895-1906), the Anglo-Japanese Alliance (1902-1923), Sino-Soviet relations (1949-1961), and Sino-Japanese relations today. Kupchan’s lecture will draw on his new book, "How Enemies Become Friends: The Sources of Stable Peace." Details of the event are as follows:
