Invitation to the seminar on "Peace Building in Southern Thailand―The Role of Citizen Media" on Sep. 8 (Wed)
Closed.
Please visit SPF on USTREAM! (September 8th, 2010 (Wed) 15:00 to 17:00)
Southern Thailand, often referred to as the "Deep South", consists of three provinces: Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. The region, which borders Malaysia, has a distinct history and culture as well as a population that is principally Malay Muslim. The “Deep South” still suffers from a conflict, in which a series of violent acts has been committed in relation to the local secessionist movement. The conflict has deep roots stretching back to the “Patani Kingdom” that existed in the region in medieval times. The conflict has grown increasingly violent since 2004, and the death toll over the past six years is reported to exceed four thousand.
International society has little interest in the conflict in Southern Thailand, and with the backdrop of the sharpening political clash in Bangkok between UDD (in support of former Prime Minister Thaksin) and PAD (against former Prime Minister Thaksin), a path for a political solution to the conflict in Southern Thailand is still not in sight. The local people feel trapped; however, some groups of people are working for a peaceful solution. Among these groups are the highly active “citizen media”. These include community radio, which facilitates inter-ethnic dialogues and trust building, and internet media, which provides information on the conflict situation to international society.
In this seminar, citizen media practitioners working for peace in Southern Thailand and former conflict areas in Indonesia and East Timor will be invited to introduce initiatives by citizen media for peace building and discuss the issue of peace building in Southern Thailand.
