Invitation to
"America's Strategic Restraint and its Implications for the U.S.-Japan Alliance"
A Lecture by Dr. Patrick M. Cronin On July. 8 (Thu)
Closed.
The Sasakawa Peace Foundation has invited Dr. Patrick M. Cronin, Senior Advisor and Senior Director of the Asia Program at the Center for a New America Security, to speak on the theme of ‘America's Strategic Restraint and its Implications for the U.S.-Japan Alliance” on July 8, 2010. Dr. Cronin holds the position that the preeminent status of the United States, built on extensive spending and strong military power, is unsustainable, and the era of boundless commitment and profligacy has passed. In his analysis, rising power centers are unlikely to contribute much more to a liberal world order based on our democratic and free-market principles. In the absence of others to shoulder greater responsibilities, and faced with a shifting and complex global environment, America is likely to encounter heavier security burdens, not lighter ones. Hence, traditional allies who share common values will become even more important for U.S. and international security. In the course of the lecture, Dr. Cronin will shed light on paths Japan could take as an ally of the U.S. in a changing international environment characterized by the rise of emergent nations and American restraint in both spending and military investment.
