President Obama's proposal for global nuclear disarmament has re-energized the vision of "a world free of nuclear weapons." Yet the path to abolition of nuclear weapons is far from simple. Many issues, such as improved security for nuclear weapons materials, and the balance between the credibility of U.S. extended deterrence and the promotion of nuclear disarmament, require further discussion between the United States and Japan on how to reach the goal of "a world free of nuclear weapons."

In light of this situation, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, in cooperation with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, has invited Former Secretary of Defence Dr. William Perry, a pivotal figure in crafting nuclear disarmament policy under the Obama administration, and who currently serves as the Michael and Barbara Berberian Professor at Stanford University, as well as other distinguished experts from the United States and Japan, to discuss the roles of Japan and the United States in global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
