　Sustained persecution and prolonged conflict, particularly in Africa and the Middle East, has led to a growing flow of refugees to neighboring and European countries. Indeed, by the end of 2015, the number of displaced people worldwide had grown to over 60 million. Since it became party to the UN Refugee Convention in 1981, Japan has sheltered around 14,000 people from global humanitarian crises and, after becoming the first Asian nation to start Refugee Resettlement Program in 2010, has welcomed 31 refugee families (totaling 123 individuals) from Myanmar.

　The SPF focuses on conducting empirical research around the issues of refugee resettlement and social integration amongst local communities, both domestically and abroad, and also produces a "regional resettlement guidebook" for local Japanese communities thinking of welcoming refugees. In this vein, the SPF is pleased to welcome two European local government delegates who are currently playing a leading role in support of refugee resettlement in their respective communities. The delegates will speak about how they have dealt with issues arising from refugee resettlement in their community as well as discussing the implications and outlook for Japan's acceptance of refugees going forward. We look forward to welcoming you to what is sure to be a lively and informative discussion.
