This web forum aims at building the analysis tools for a better understanding of the NGO phenomena in total of fifteen Asian countries. Today NGOs have become important actors in many countries including both advanced and developing, although they have emerged differently in each country. In this forum we intend to work together through discussion on the web in order to explore why the NGOs take on different forms and what possibilities exist for the development of NGOs under different environments. As a basis of this forum, we published "The State and NGOs: Perspective from Asia" edited by Shinichi Shigetomi, from Institute of Southeast Asian Studies based in Singapore. This volume examines the State-NGO relationships in fifteen Asian countries. All of its contributors use the same analytical framework that focuses on the key concept of economic and political space for NGOs. We will post up the comments from readers of this forum together with their names, on the page directly related to the discussion, as long as they conform to the rules described on the web page. We sincerely encourage those who are interested in NGO activities, such as researchers, scholars, NGO practitioners, public servants, volunteers and students etc. to participate in this discussion.
