"U.S.-China Relations : Implications for the Asia-Pacific and the World"

On the evening of May 14, the Brookings Institution in conjunction with the Sasakawa Peace Foundation will convene a public event on the future of U.S.-China relations and the implications across the Asia-Pacific and world. Despite a recent history of largely cooperative Sino-U.S. relations, the region has become more tense, and many American friends and allies are also facing challenges in their relationships with Beijing. In their new book, Strategic Reassurance and Resolve: U.S.-China Relations in the Twenty-First Century, James Steinberg and Michael O’Hanlon argue for a long-term approach blending resoluteness with strategic reassurance, as a policy guide for the actions of all relevant players. Hitoshi Tanaka, Chairman of the International Institute for Strategic Studies,Japan Research Institute will join them to discuss proposals to achieve both a sustainable and relatively cooperative relationship between the U.S. and China.

Dr. James Steinberg, Dr. Michael O'Hanlon

Steinberg is Dean of the Maxwell School of Public Affairs at Syracuse University as well as former Deputy Secretary of State, and O’Hanlon is a Senior Fellow at The Brookings Institution.
