UN and its Peace Efforts in the Era of Great Power Rivalry

By Stephen Browne

November 24, 2022
"Future of Peace Operations" project at the Security Studies Program has published an article "UN and its Peace Efforts in the Era of Great Power Rivalry" by Mr. Stephen Browne, a renowned scholar on the United Nations with more than 30 years of field and HQ experiences who currently teaches at University of Geneva.

To understand how the UN peace operations are formed and implemented, it is necessary first to understand how "the Three UNs" the major stake holders of the member states, the secretariat and the global public interact. This article analytically reveals how these UNs, each having unique identity and ways to influence, interplay in practice by looking at historical evolution of peace operations. It also categorises four types of peace operations - three types of peacekeeping and one for peacebuilding - and argues how the role of peacebuilding has widened to include "ex ante" as opposed to post-conflict peacebuilding.

Report: Table Top Exercise (TTX) on the Taiwan Strait Crisis

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation conducted a Table Top Exercise (TTX) in Japan, as part of the "Table Top Exercise on the Taiwan Strait Crisis" (FY 2022) project.
