This collection of essays is part of a series that publishes the analytical works from a project initiated in 1995 by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) and decocted to the study of the social, economic, and political development of the countries of Central Asia and the South Caucasus. The essays published here represent papers that were presented at the biannual conferences in 2005: the first in Almaty, Kazakhstan in June 2005 (jointly organized by SPF and the Kazakhstani analytical journal Exclusive) and the second in Goa, India in November 2005 (jointly organized by SPF and the International Center of Goa, India).
