Hunting and fishing at Takeshima start

Hunting and fishing at what is now called Takeshima begun during the mid-17th century. In 1681, Oya Kyuemon III (Katsunobu) made a reply to Shogunate officials that “We are hunting sea lions for oil on that small island we were granted 25 years ago.” (Ref.1)

Ishii Soetsu, in a correspondence addressed to Oya Doki circa 1650, indicated that Murakawa Ichibei was hunting sea lions on Matsushima (present-day Takeshima). (Ref.2)
