The existence of an ocean current around the Ogasawara Islands, known as the Ogasawara Current, has long been recognized by various explorers. According to an ocean current survey conducted in the summer of 1894, it was reported that the direction and speed of ocean currents were not uniform at east of a longitude of 140°E and between latitudes of 28°N and 32°N. This was thought to be due to the existence of currents flowing in a direction counter to the Kuroshio Current northwest of the Ogasawara Islands. This counter current to the Kuroshio Current flowed westward between 141°E and 27-28°N, sometimes covering distances of 50 nautical miles in 24 hours. (Ref. 1)
