Okinotorishima consists of table-shaped coral reefs. (Ref. 1) It extends 4.5 km east to west, and 1.7 km north to south, with the coral reef having a circumference of 11 km, and being comprised of Higashikojima and Kitakojima. These two islands have been subject to seawall construction since 1987 to prevent erosion of the islands. (Ref. 2)
Minamitorishima is the only coral reef island of Japan to be located on the Pacific Plate. In recent years, muddy sediments called rare earth mud containing abundant rare earth elements (REE) have been found to exist in the surrounding exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and surveys and research, including environmental impact assessments, are being conducted with a view to developing these REE as a resource.
