The Kazan Island Group is located on the Shichito-Iwoto Ridge, the present volcanic front of the Izu-Ogasawara Arc, and consists of three islands from north to south: Kita Iwoto, Iwoto, and Minami Iwoto. Kita Iwoto is the summit of a massive submarine volcano rising from a depth of about 1,500 to 2,000 m, with advanced dissected quaternary volcano. Basaltic rocks are distributed on both Kita Iwoto and Minami Iwoto, and there are no records of volcanic activity on either island. (Ref. 1) Iwoto has a caldera topography 10 km in diameter and is characterized by producing high alkaline andesitic rocks. (Ref. 2)
