Ogasawara islanders were forced to evacuate to the mainland

  • Feb 26, 2025

Given changes of the war situation, on April 4, 711 islanders were taken by military vessel to the Japanese mainland. Subsequently, following U.S. air raids in June, the remaining residents of Ogasawara, including Chichijima, Hahajima and Iwo Jima, were forcibly evacuated to the mainland by order of the Japanese military. Forced evacuations started on June 30, and continued until early August. Approximately 7,000 people were removed to the mainland. Among the islanders 825 young men were ordered to remain behind to produce and supply food for the military troop stationed on the islands, and after the end of the war, together with Japanese soldiers, they were repatriated to the mainland by the U.S. military.
