Perry called at Chichijima and purchased land for a coal storage

Perry had long believed the Ogasawara Islands to be an important location for trade and commerce, so he visited Chichijima, which is one of the Ogasawara Islands, after visiting Naha islands as he sought to recommend it as a port of call on Pacific steamer routes based on his own surveys. He selected a location on the northern side of Port Lloyd that would be suitable for an office, coal storage and other buildings. At this time Perry released several animals on the island and distributed vegetable seeds to the settlers. (Ref. 1)
