In 1830, five westerners from the Sandwich Islands (present-day Hawaii), together with a group of native men and women from the Sandwich Islands arrived on the Ogasawara Islands. One of the Americans was Nathaniel Savory, who, after settling on the island grew sweet potatoes, from which he also distilled rum, which he used to trade with the whaling ships that would visit the Ogasawara Islands. Upon the visit of Perry in 1853, Savory was the sole survivor. (Ref. 1, 2)
