Interaction / Exchange
The members of the Project, who are in their 30s/40s and specialize in international affairs, will analyze changing international affairs in the Asia-Pacific region and the future role of the US-Japan relations. In the course of the Project, the members will: (i) interact both with foreign and domestic experts, (ii) analyze the consequences and effects of globalization, geopolitics, and strategies of major countries for the next 15-20 years, and (iii) jointly produce policy recommendations on Japan’s national security strategy including more effective cooperation with the United States and other countries.
The Project has benefited greatly from the interaction with foreign and domestic security experts ? both practitioners and academics in the fields of foreign affairs, defense, maritime transportation, trade, energy. For example, the Project has invited to Tokyo renowned scholars from the U.S. in order to solicit their knowledge of security and strategic issues (see chart below). The Project members also travelled to New Delhi and Singapore in January 2010 and exchanged views with security experts in the region. Upon assessing future scenarios, the Project interacted with a wide range of Japanese security experts through the distribution of questionnaires. The members also exchanged views with emerging Japanese scholars and practitioners on the Project’s overall framework.
These interactive processes have allowed the Project to establish a new network of next-generation policy experts that would not only revitalize Japan-US intellectual exchange, but will also buttress Japan’s intellectual exchange with the rest of the world.
