In a continuing effort to improve library services and literacy education in the Pacific island region, local advisory committees (LACs) set up in the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Kiribati and Vanuatu implemented a range of initiatives aimed at meeting specific local needs. This year's project activities included training programs for education specialists; literacy-level surveys and practical literacy education; expansion of library services; production of a native language dictionary and teaching materials; and efforts to promote networking between the LACs and other relevant organization in the region.
