Translation and Publication of the Works of Hisakafsu Hijikata

Project contents
The works of Hisakatsu Hijikata, an amateur ethnographer who made extensive field observations in Micronesia before and during World War II, are regarded as among the most valuable records of traditional ways of life in the region. Through this project, a number of his writings were translated, published and donated to libraries, universities, and research institutes in the Pacific Islands and throughout the world. In FY 1995, the final year of the project, the four-volume translation series was completed with publication of the third and fourth volumes, and 1,000 copies of each were donated to relevant institutions. The series has won high acclaim from Oceania scholars around the world, attracting favorable reviews in academic journals and on the Internet and generating numerous inquiries to SPF from overseas. In the Palau Islands and Micronesia, the works have attracted keen interest as valuable resources for school education.
