FY1995

Island Forum in Japan

Project contents
This project aims to enhance mutual understanding and exchange between Japan and the island nations of the South Pacific by bringing together Japanese intellectuals, opinion leaders, and island residents to discuss issues specifically related to island communities. This year, two meetings were held on the islands of Hachijo (July) and Sado (December), and a third was held in Tokyo (February). Participants in the island-hosted meetings included Pacific islanders currently living in Japan, and at the Tokyo gathering Mr. Tasi Afeaki from Tonga delivered a speech on the topic of whaling and the Pacific islands.
