Study on Cross Border Economic Relations and Social Transformation in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region

Project contents
The ties between Southeast Asian nations and China are strengthening in tandem with China's economic development. In particular, interchanges of people, goods, money and information, be they formal or otherwise, have expanded in frontier areas of the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) where China borders Southeast Asian countries. To promote stable development in East Asia, it is necessary to have a good grasp of the political, economic, and societal transformations that are taking place in frontier areas from the perspective of the entire region. The objective of this project is to investigate interactions at national borders within the GMS, in collaboration with Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and cooperating entities including the Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences of China and Nong Lam University of Vietnam, with a report ensuing on the transformations, along with their implications, within and outside the region.

In this fiscal year, as was the case last fiscal year, research teams consisting of researchers from Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, and China (Yunnan Province) will be assembled and the following activities will be carried out.
  • Additional field work (April to May, 2009)
Additional field work will be carried out as necessary in selected remote regions. In the interests of outlining a theoretical framework for the final report, data collected by the research teams will be analyzed and further literature surveys will be conducted. To put into sharper focus the economic and social changes that have taken place in the region, detailed interviews, local seminars, and other such fieldwork will be carried out.
  • Creation of the final project report (April to December, 2009)
Results of research and fieldwork carried out by the various teams over the last three years in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, and China (Yunnan Province) will be compiled into a final project report containing information on the following topics.
    a) Activities in the target remote regions (cross-border trade, movement of people and funds), and their economic and social effects
    b) The role of the East-West & North-South Economic Corridors
    c) The effects of activities in the GMS on other countries and necessity of regional collaboration projects
  • Workshop (July 2009, Bangkok)
A workshop will be held to determine the content of the final report. The workshop will be attended by research team representatives from each target country.
  • International conference (February 2010, Bangkok)
Around sixty Thai and overseas specialists in relevant fields and politicians will be invited to attend an international conference at which the research results of the last three years will be made public.
