Market Economy Training and Study Tours for Top Policy Makers in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar

Project contents
The sweeping economic reforms taking place in Indochina have made it crucial for policy makers in the region to gain a thorough understanding of market economy principles. With this in mind, the Human Resources Institute of Thammasat University, Thailand, began conducting market economy training programs in 1992 for policy makers from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. In FY 1994, the final year of the project, 34 trainees completed the program (25 from Vietnam and three from each of the other target countries), bringing the total number for the project to 99. The success of the human network thus created between Thailand and its Indochinese neighbors prompted the Thai government to take over the project from 1995 under a special development assistance scheme called "Thai Aid."
