Educational Television Broadcast of "The Structure of Market Economy" in Vietnam

Project contents
In an effort to help introduce market economy principles to the Vietnamese people at the grassroots-level, a six-part television series about Japan (produced under a project administered by The Sasakawa Central Europe Fund; see p.69) was translated into Vietnamese and broadcast nationally in Vietnam. Meanwhile, the Vietnam Youth Union conducted interview surveys in three regions of Vietnam before the series was aired in order to gauge how much ordinary Vietnamese knew about the basic mechanisms of market economy. After the broadcasts, furthermore, the Union conducted a second round of interviews asking viewers of the program what they thought of it and how well they understood it. The results of the two surveys were compared and compiled into a report on Vietnamese popular perceptions of market economy that was submitted to the Vietnamese information ministry, education ministry and prime minister's office. In addition, a documentary covering the entire process of the project itself―from the surveys and audience responses to the television series, to a final work- shop attended by economics and education experts and the compilation of the project report― was produced and aired nationally by Vietnam's central television broadcaster.
