Human Resource Development Program for the Economic Research in Myanmar

Project contents
Young researchers in Myanmar have few opportunities to receive instruction because of their environment. This project aims to provide these researchers with opportunities for research in the field of economics and to improve their skills.
In fiscal 2007, nine young economists from Myanmar, selected the previous year as research students, were divided into three study groups on (1) economic development, (2) industrial development, and (3) agriculture and rural development. They conducted surveys in Myanmar pertaining to the research themes of their respective groups, and once a week, supervisors from Myanmar provided the students with guidance on their respective theses.
The top three research students were sent to Chulalongkorn University in Thailand from October 7 to November 4, 2007. While at the university, Professor Kitti Limskul of the Faculty of Economics directed the research students in conducting joint research of related themes with scholars at Chulalongkorn University .
Also, on December 21 and 22 the research students attended intensive lecture courses taught by supervisors from Japan and Myanmar, and on March 1 and 2 a small-scale seminar was held to present the progress of the theses written by the research students. The research students will continue to write their theses as they head toward completion of the program at the end of fiscal 2008.
