The Sasakawa Peace Foundation and The Sasakawa Pacific Island Nations Fund presents:
Symposium on Marine Pollution and Environmental Protection in the Pacific Islands -Recommendations for PALM 5 Summit-
May 14, 2009 10:00-16:30
Background:
Conservation and sustainable use of the marine resources represented by coral reefs and mangrove forests is prerequisite to the continued well-being and culture of the Pacific Island peoples. Since its inception in 1997, the PALM Summit has continually acknowledged the importance of protection and sustainable use of the rich marine resources in the Pacific. On the occasion of the 5th PALM Summit in Tomamu, Hokkaido this May, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation held a symposium specifically focusing on marine pollution and the feasibility of establishing a sanctuary in the Pacific Island region. The aim of the symposium is to solicit concrete recommendations on how to take concepts and pledges formulated at previous summit meetings and put them into practice. We have invited Ambassador Hiroyuki Ishi as keynote speaker at the symposium, to be joined by NGO representatives and government officials from relevant ministries and departments, who gave presentations covering various topics.
