FY2006

Okinawa-Pacific Education Network Initiative

Project contents
In an effort to find solutions to problems shared by all island nations, this project aims to promote exchange between Micronesia and Japan by promoting collaboration between the University of the Ryukyus and institutions of higher education in Micronesia on civic programs, student exchanges, and joint research projects.
An essay contest on the theme, "Our Island's Water Problems," was held for high school and university students on Amami and Okinawa islands. The five winners were sent to Palau August 7-13, 2006, where they conducted field surveys and interacted with local students. The University of Guam, the College of Micronesia-FSM, and Palau Community College held similar contests, and the three selected winners were invited to Amami and Okinawa islands October 15-22, 2006. During that time, they took part in student-exchange programs focused on water issues and attended the Coconuts College of the Pacific (held October 19-21), which is an exchange program for the general public.
In recognition of the need to develop more cooperative structures between island nation universities, discussions were held with the aim of identifying possibilities for joint research between Northern Marianas College, Palau Community College, and the University of the Ryukyus.
