India Japan Strategic Dialogue Project

Project Outline
By inviting Indian parliamentarians to Japan, this project aims to provide a forum for exchange with individuals in political and economic circles, and others from Japan, strengthen the Japan-India cooperative framework, construct new partnerships and promote mutual understanding.

From October 25-31, 2015, a multi-party delegation of Indian parliamentarians visited Japan. (Cities visited: Tokyo, Kanazawa)

With the purpose of strengthening bilateral ties between the leadership of the two countries, in 2004, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) launched the foundation’s flagship initiative, the India-Japan Strategic Dialogue Project in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). On the occasion of the 12th anniversary of the project, in 2015, railway transport was selected as the main focus of the delegation, and four Members of Parliament representing various states and parties have been invited to Japan. With specific reference to high speed railway transport, the group has taken a ride on the new Hokuriku Shinkansen High Speed Rail between Tokyo and Kanazawa and visited a Shinkansen operational facility to explore its technical strength and performance capabilities as well as managerial aspects to maintain its excellent safety records. During the stay, the members had also a number of productive and fruitful discussions with leading Japanese policy makers and leaders over topics of mutual interest. The key officials visited by the group include Mr. Hiroyuki Hosoda, Chairman of the Japan-India Parliamentary Friendship League, Mr. Yasutoshi Nishimura, Vice Chairman cum Secretary General of the Japan-India Parliamentary Friendship League, Mr. Junzo Yamamoto, State Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and Mr. Masakazu Hamachi, Parliamentary Vice-Ministers for Foreign Affairs.

On October 27, 2015, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation organised a commemorative seminar where the delegation leader, Mr. VP Singh Badnore made a presentation entitled ‘Modernization and Upgradation of Rail Infrastructure: Scope for India-Japan Cooperation’. Given the details on successful high speed and urban railway projects around the world as well as infrastructure financing mechanisms, the commentator, Prof. Dr. Shigeru Morichi has addressed a number of key issues concerning business opportunities for Japanese firms in Asian rail transport sectors, competition between high-speed rail and air transport in developing countries and so on.
