Symposia on Industrial Reform in Myanmar

Project contents
While Myanmar has been undergoing a transition to market economy since 1988, little is yet known about the current state or direction of business enterprises in the country, and the government has yet to settle upon a definite direction in its fundamental industrial policy. To help redress this situation, a survey was conducted to determine the current status of 100 companies in Myanmar, and symposia were held in Myanmar and Japan to announce the results of the survey and to bring managers of small and medium-size companies up to date on industrial reform. The survey was carried out by a team of researchers from Japan, Thailand and Myanmar. In March 1998, an English-language report, comprising the survey findings and policy recommendations, was published and submitted to Myanmar's Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development, Ministry of Industry I and Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, among other relevant agencies and organizations.
