Assistance in Establishing an Intellectual Foundation for Contemporary Japanese Studies in India

Project contents
Although exchange between Japan and India has become more prevalent, attempts in India to promote understanding of Japan have been limited to Japanese language education and introductions to Japanese culture, and few opportunities exist in the country to research and provide information related to modern Japanese politics, economics, and society. This project supports the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations, the grantee, in establishing a research program on such topics as modern Japanese politics, economics, and society, and accordingly aims to contribute to the building of an intellectual foundation for research, discussion, and information dissemination in the relevant fields.
In fiscal 2007 three people from Japan, including Professor Eisuke Sakakibara of Waseda University, were invited to two speaking engagements in New Delhi on the themes of "India and Japan in the Globalized Economy" and "Politics and Civil Society in India and Japan." In addition, researchers selected from Jawaharlal Nehru University and other institutions conducted research and completed research papers related to "Informal Values and Formal Policies: A Study of Japan' s Technology Policy and Lesson for India" and "Opportunities and Challenges for Indo- Japan Cooperation." A website (www.icrier.org/indojapan/) was also developed carrying the research papers, their lecture notes, and other research on Japan.
