The Sasakawa Pacific Island Nations Fund will host a seminar on the new pacific diplomacy effort undertaken by pacific island nations, which have been changing drastically, and to discuss future relationships between the countries and Japan.

Given their lack of human resources, weak economies, limitation in size and other factors, pacific island nations were generally regarded to be under the strong economic or political influence of development partners. In contrast to such understandings, recently these countries have been spearheading an array of diplomatic efforts in fisheries, climate change, security, and other regional policy domains.

Apparently the underlying factor of these movements is a deep concern. The nations are feeling the need to review their previous relationship with development partners by setting the region’s solid economic growth, human resource development through the University of the South Pacific (USP), and accumulation of experience within the international community as a groundwork, thereby having their views as nations and as a region incorporated into world economy, climate change, and other global issues influencing the security of the states.

We invited Dr. Sandra Tarte, Head of USP’s School of Government, Politics and International Affairs, and Mr. Greg Fry, Associate Professor of the Australian National University Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy, to this seminar. Under the topic of new pacific diplomacy, the two guests will give presentations covering issues such as the changing regional political system in Oceania, regionalism, pacific diplomacy, and the possible impact on engagement with external powers.
