The Sasakawa Pacific Island Nations Fund is hosting a seminar to discuss future relationships between pacific island nations and Japan by understanding both the fisheries diplomacy of the island nations and their increasing influence in the international society.

Given their geological conditions, modest market size, and limited resources and industries, pacific island nations has typically been given emphasis on their fragile economy. However, recent analyses by such bodies as the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank, and the IMF show that the economies of these nations are generally developing in a stable fashion. The smaller island nations (e.g. Nauru, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Marshall Islands) in particular have lately been significantly improving their revenue through the effective use of fishery resources. Meanwhile, regional situations have been shifting concurrently with economic conditions, thereby providing the island nations with a stronger say and influence in the international society.

The Sasakawa Pacific Island Nations Fund sees the active efforts made by the fisheries domain of the Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) as a representative manifestation of the island nations' increasing economic independence and influence among the international society.

Dr. Transform Aqorau, Technical and Legal Adviser and former CEO for PNA, as well as Ms. Maria Sahib, International Fisheries Policy Analyst of the Marshall Islands Marine Resource Authority, have been invited for this seminar. The two will give presentations on the active fishery resource-based efforts, diplomatic and regional/national-level initiatives, and future prospects concerning the island nations.
