Building a New BIMSTEC: Towards BIMSTEC - Japan Cooperation

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
Building a New BIMSTEC: Towards BIMSTEC - Japan Cooperation
Closed.
Among multi-tiered economic cooperation initiatives brought forward in Asia through bilateral or multi-lateral trade agreements, the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) which is a sub-regional grouping combining currently seven geographically contiguous South Asian and ASEAN countries inclusive of India, Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, is growing more and more important. As mentioned in its official website, “BIMSTEC provides a unique link between South Asia and Southeast Asia, bringing together approximately 1.3 billion people - 21 percent of the world population, a combined GDP of US$750 billion, and a considerable amount of complementarities.” However, the sub-region seems to be still unfamiliar to many of the Japanese academia as well as the policy makers, in spite of the huge economic potentials as well as the strategic importance the BIMSTEC possesses. In view of the above-mentioned, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation is providing a research grant to the India-based Centre for Studies in International Relations and Development (CSIRD), which, since April 2005, has been taking the initiative in a collaborative research project entitled “Possibilities for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership between BIMSTEC Countries and Japan”. In a bid to advocate for further strengthened collaboration between the sub-region and Japan, the joint study, with participation from researchers in the related countries, has been examining the possibilities in the core areas such as trade and investment, infrastructure, tourism, economic assistance, energy and fishery. As part of these collaborative efforts, an international conference will be held in Tokyo, which will bring together eminent researchers from the BIMSTEC member countries, as well as a broad number of policy makers and academia in Tokyo. The conference aims to further explore and discuss on the key issues mainly from the perspective of Japan. Details are provided as below.
