On Apr. 15, Syrian Conflicts and Turkish Response: Foreign Policy, Refugees and Security
(Friday, April 15, 2016, 15:00-17:00)
Closed.
On April 15, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) will organize a public lecture to be delivered by an Advisor to Prime Minister of Turkey and two senior researchers from the Foundation of Political, Economic and Social Research (SETA Foundation).

Mesut Ozcan currently advises foreign policies at the Office of the Prime Minister of Turkey and concurrently is the Director of Diplomacy Academy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was the former Deputy Chairman of Center for Strategic Research (SAM). Kilic Kanat is the Research Director of SETA Foundation in Washington DC and also an Assistant Professor, Pennsylvania State University. Ufuk Ulutas is Director of Foreign Policy Research, SETA Foundation. These three distinguished experts have been actively articulating their views regarding those key factors that affect Turkish politics and diplomacy.

Since October 2010, the democratization known as “Arab Spring” that started in Tunisia has spread to Egypt and Libya but the democratization has collapsed later on. Consequently, politics and civil societies in the Middle East have been destabilized. Protracted instability in Iraq compounded with civil war in Syria caused the emergence of Islamic State that further threatens the fragile situation in Syria. Once Turkey had been a stable power in the Middle East; now from 1.5 million to 2 million refugees flooded to Turkey and it has been a heavy burden for Turkey. Against this background, this public lecture will address how Turkish government has responded to Syrian conflicts with particular emphasis on foreign policy, refugees and security.

We look forward to welcoming all of you at this seminar.
