Pilot Archaeological Training Program in the Pacific Islands

Project contents
The purpose of this project is to cultivate the expertise of trainee archaeologists from the Pacific Islands region in order that they can better preserve the cultural heritages of their home countries. This year, a total of 30 trainees took part in training sessions at three sites. Two sites are on the island of Ponape in Micronesia and on the Vanuatu Islands in Melanesia. Meanwhile, at a third, on Huahine Island in French Polynesia, the NGO Opu Nui was established to carry on the management of archeological sites there. Information about the management of the Huahine sites was gathered and compiled into a report which was published commercially in English, French, Japanese and Polynesian editions. The book will be distributed to visitors to Huahine Island and is also expected to be used as a text in local schools.
