The rapid pace of modernization in Micronesia has created a situation in which people there are not always fully aware of the problems in their societies. Meanwhile, more than 20,000 Micronesians who have been overseas to work or study have experienced problems in readjusting after returning to their home islands.
This year, this project converted into digital form the data collected over more than 20 years of research into social problems in Micronesia by the Micronesian Seminar and set up a website for the seminar (www.micsem.org). A web forum was created, and there was lively discussion of various social problems facing Micronesian societies, with 10 to 20 people contributing to the exchange on each topic. Consultations were also held with relevant institutions, with a view to enabling participants in the Micronesian Seminar to earn credits from colleges in the region.
