This project aims to provide opportunities for exchanges for active military officers (Colonel to Major, and Captain to Lieutenant Commander) or retired Generals of Japan and other Asian countries in order to promote mutual understanding and build confidence in the field of security, and by so doing contribute to peace and stability in the Asia region.

Defense Exchange between Retired Generals of Japan Self-Defense Force and Korean retired Generals
A Japan Self-Defense Forces delegation of 11 field officers, led by a Major General, visited Vietnam for a 7-day trip beginning June 26, 2016. The officers paid a courtesy call to Senior Lieutenant General Vo Van Tuan (Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Vietnam People's Army), had an informal discussion with Senior Colonel Nguyen Dai Hoi (Vice Director General of the Department of Foreign Relations, Ministry of National Defense), and visited the Institute for Defense Strategy, the Air Defense Air Force Academy, and the land, sea, and air forces of Vietnam. These visits and discussions served to provide the Japanese delegation with a greater overall understanding of the Vietnam People's Army, while also achieving exchange between Japanese and Vietnamese military management at the field-officer level. The Japanese delegation also visited Vietnam's historical landmarks and deepened their understanding of Vietnam's culture and history.
Defense Exchange between Retired Generals of Japan Self-Defense Force and Korean retired Generals
Seven Korean retired Generals visited Japan for a 4-day trip beginning November 14, 2016. The generals paid a courtesy call to Vice Minister of Defense Kenji Wakamiya, Chief of Staff, Joint Staff Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano, had an informal discussion with the retired generals in Japan, and visited the bases of the Ground, Maritime and Air Self-Defense Force in Okinawa. These visits and discussions served to provide the Korean retired Generals with a greater overall understanding of the national security of Japan and Korea. They also visited Japanese historical landmarks in Tokyo and Naha and deepened their understanding of Japanese culture and history.
A Vietnam People’s Army’s delegation of 14 field officers, led by a Major General, visited Japan for a 7-day trip beginning December 4, 2016. The officers paid a courtesy call to Minister of Defense Tomomi Inada, Vice Minister for International Affairs, Ministry of Defense Ro Manabe, Vice Chief of Staff, Joint Staff Lieutenant General Kazuaki Sumida, had some informal discussion in Ministry of Defense and visited the bases and camps of the Ground, Maritime and Air Self-Defense Force in Hokkaido. These visits and discussions served to provide the Vietnam delegation with a greater overall understanding of the Japanese national security while also achieving exchange between Japanese and Vietnamese military management at the field-officer level. The Vietnam delegation also visited Japanese historical landmarks in Tokyo and Hokkaido and deepened their understanding of Japanese culture and history.
