Capacity Building for Higher Education Sector in Cambodia

Project contents
The Pol Pot regime left an extremely shallow pool of elite, educated personnel in Cambodia. Although the situation has been changing in recent years and many private universities have been established, primarily around Phnom Penh, the support provided by aid organizations still tends to be concentrated in primary education. Under this project, lecturers from Asian countries, including Japan, are being invited to talk at workshops designed to improve the management capabilities of instructors at the Royal Academy of Cambodia who are in positions of leadership in the field of higher education.
At a preparatory meeting held in Tokyo in January 2007, Professor Kim Ji Hong of the Korea Development Institute, and Vice President Kenji Horiguchi and Professor Masao Nishimura of Waseda University finalized the programs and schedules of the workshops. Three training workshops were held in Phnom Penh to impart presentation skills (February 20-23), teaching skills (March 13-16), and communication skills (March 20-23). The workshop materials were collected and made available at the library of the Royal Academy so they can be used by educators who did not participate in the workshop.
