The ASEAN-Japan 40 Year Anniversary Symposium
"The Course of ASEAN Economic Integration and the Implications for Japan" on December 4, 2013
In recent years the countries of ASEAN have been drawing much attention from the rest of the world as emerging markets and new bases for industry. This year marks the 40th year of relations between ASEAN and Japan, and as such represents an important milestone. Accordingly, the partnership has been deepening of late, with increased investment in ASEAN by Japan, among other initiatives.

And for Japanese businesses operating within ASEAN, as well as for the Japanese economy as a whole, the success or failure of the ASEAN Economic Framework, scheduled for completion by 2015, is of considerable importance. Nevertheless, not enough is yet known about the status of economic integration on a domestic level within Japan, nor the relevant future prospects. Moreover, necessary preparations and measures are not being taken to ensure that integration can take place smoothly.

In light of this situation, this upcoming symposium will take the opportunity of the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit (Dec 13-15; Tokyo) to discuss the future of ASEAN economic integration and the implications for Japan. Speaking at the event will be representatives of the Japan government, international organizations, the ASEAN-Japan Center, universities and research institutes, and the private sector, in an effort to discover possibilities for Japan and other ASEAN countries to thrive as a unified community.
